Hello Landfall Residents,
In response to resident inquiries received in response to Landfall COA Board Chairman Bill Hamlet’s last article in The Landfall Voice, I wanted to share with you the ways that we are supporting sustainability here in the Landfall community. Our community has been in existence for almost 40 years and we continue to be focused on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations of Landfall residents to enjoy its beauty for years to come. The concept of sustainability improves the quality of people’s lives, protects our ecosystem, and preserves natural resources. We work diligently in relevant ways everyday here in Landfall to help ensure sustainability.
As you may already know, we have 250 acres of conservation areas, with many of these conservation areas initially used for mitigation of other Landfall property. As our surrounding areas continue to grow, these natural areas only become more valuable.
We recycle all vegetative waste collected on property in-house and use it as mulch in certain areas of the property. In addition, we make our own topsoil out of “broken down” mulch. Over the last couple of years, we have switched all of our street lights to LED bulbs and now 80% of all building lighting is LED. We have also moved all street lights to time of use rates and all of our fountains are on timers. We are continually investigating solar landscape lighting options.
We use well water to wash all COA equipment and vehicles, as well as for irrigation purposes. As a result, no Wilmington City or New Hanover County water is used for irrigation.
We have a “step down” storm water system that means that rainfall runs off buildings, roads, and other hard surfaces into underground pipes that flow directly into the nearest stream, pond, or water retention pond. All retention pond water is tested to make sure we get maximum results from the chemical that we use. To go one step further, we have on-staff ten State of North Carolina-licensed Pesticide Applicators to assure all proper personal and environmental standards are met or exceeded.
In 2021, we purchased our first electric mower and are investigating the use of additional electric equipment. We have our own fueling station here in Landfall and only use high test/premium gasoline in our vehicles and equipment.
