Beyond historic and cultural attractions, Wilmington offers fine dining, shopping, spas, cinemas, concerts, gardens, art galleries, and educational institutions.
Travelers enjoy their own international airport, Wilmington International Airport (ILM), with direct service to major cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Cincinnati, and Atlanta. If you prefer to drive, Wilmington is accessible by two interstates, I-40 to the north and I-74/I-76 to the west.
Landfall is surrounded by great shopping centers filled with exceptional restaurants and stores, including The Forum, Landfall Center, Lumina Station, Plaza East, and The Galleria. Restaurant choices include seafood, steak-house, pub, tapas, continental, southern, French, Italian, Greek, Mexican, Chinese, Thai; and everything from beach casual to dressy. There are three Harris Teeter grocery stores, two Food Lions, The Fresh Market and Lovey’s Health Food store all less than five minutes from Landfall’s gates.
A little further down the road, downtown Wilmington is dotted with antique stores and art galleries, intermixed with an eclectic choice of cafés and bistros along city streets or on the Cape Fear River boardwalk.
Wilmington has a large and diverse network of medical professionals and is serviced by two hospitals. In 2003, New Hanover Regional Medical Center became the 70th hospital to receive the prestigious Magnet Award for its nursing excellence and Cape Fear Hospital is gaining a reputation for it’s orthopedic services.
The city has become a major center of American film and television production. It is not uncommon to witness Frank Capra’s EUE Screen Gems Studio filming around town. The studio has produced the TV hits Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill, and major motion pictures such as the Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood and Black Dog.
South of Wilmington, you will find historic Orton Plantation and the newly renovated North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and the Fort Fisher State Park, site of one of the Civil War's key battles.
